Is the Fukuoka Grand Sumo Tournament Worth It?

Our honest take for 2026: a guided tour with a seat beats the official route for most visitors, and which of four tours fits you.

Updated October 2026

Yes, if you want to see a Grand Sumo Tournament this November and don’t already hold a ticket. Our honest take is that a guided tour with a seat is this year’s best way in for most visitors, a better bet than the official route, which is real but hard to use from outside Japan.

Everyone aged 4 and over needs a ticket; you can leave and come back as often as you like until 17:00.

Yummy Guide inc.’s tour is the one we’d book first: a chair seat plus a guide who walks you through sumo’s basics before you go in, $634 on the booking platform when we checked. It has no reviews yet, so weigh that against the three tours further down the page that do.

Why we’d pick the guided seat over going it alone

The official general sale opened on 19 September and was already marked sold out when we checked in early October. Before that, four lottery rounds through August and early September had already closed out some seat classes and days, open mostly to fan-club members in any case. The Kokusai Center isn’t selling anything at its own window this year, same-day or in advance. What’s left officially is the face-value resale on Ticket Oosumo, which runs mostly in Japanese, plus an English interface that’s credit-card only, adds a ¥2,000 fee per ticket, and prints your ticket at a 7-Eleven once you’ve landed. A tour that already has a seat built in skips the lottery, the Japanese-language resale page and the convenience-store printer in one step, and a seat your tour operator is holding for you is less likely to go wrong between booking and the gate than one bought on the open market.

Who should still go the official way

Travellers who read Japanese, are already in the country, and don’t mind collecting a printed ticket from a 7-Eleven before the day. For them, face value with no tour margin on top is the cheaper path, and arguably the fairer one. Either way, stay off resale marketplaces: the Japan Sumo Association bans reselling above face value and warns that a resold ticket may be turned away at the gate.

What you’re not getting

No tour here guarantees which wrestlers you’ll see. Stars withdraw mid-tournament; Yokozuna Onosato did on the final day in 2025. Neither of the two tours below that include a seat states exactly how its ticket was sourced, so if the date or the seat class matters to you, ask the operator before you pay.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.

There’s no free version of getting into the tournament itself: everyone aged four and up needs a ticket, and this year nobody is handing one out at the door. How to buy Fukuoka sumo tickets walks through the official route in full, and Fukuoka sumo ticket prices sets face value against what each tour costs. All four tours are also on the homepage.
